Read this Article on Houston's Animal Overpopulation

Below is a post that appeared on Unity for a Solution's facebook page today. We think it's great that people outside of the animal advocacy groups are demanding that Houston's animal overpopulation problem needs to be addressed.
Tell your city officials how you feel about the issue- links to contact info included at the end of the story.

Check out today’s Houston Chronicle article “Dump an animal, get caught” By Ingrid Lobet. It’s only available to digital subscribers but here is a link where you can see the whole article: http://muckrack.com/link/wMWy/dump-an-animal-get-c...aught

We want to highlight this portion of the article near its end: “Chris Newport, a spokesman for Houston's Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care, said the dumping is part of something deeper, not fully separable from the larger issue of strays. He says Houston needs a conversation with itself about pets, one that addresses people's reluctance to spay and neuter them, a service that is free in the city via a mobile clinic to those who cannot afford to pay. ‘A conservative figure is there are 750,000 strays on the streets of Houston,’ Newport said.”

We agree with Newport that Houston needs a conversation with itself about pets but let’s get the facts straight first:

1. BARC told Fox news reporter Natalie Bomke in a story that aired 9/21/12 that there are 1.2 million strays in Houston.
2. The spay neuter service mentioned in the article is provided by one (1) SNAP mobile clinic, which can spay or neuter up to 25 animals per visit. Even if the SNAP clinic operated every day of the year (including holidays), that totals a maximum of 9125 animals fixed per year. How does that compare with 1.2 million strays and countless owned animals that are not fixed?
3. One deterrent to using SNAP is that they require proof of government assistance which is a problem in several communities around the city.

Some of us have been out in the community signing up residents for free spay and neuter for their pets. Our experience was that many people want to spay or neuter their animals but they cannot afford to! While there are some out there who will refuse, there are many, many others who will gladly spay neuter their pets if they can do it at a reduced cost or free of charge.

Let the mayor and your city council member know how you feel about Houston’s animal overpopulation and what the city is doing to address it. If you do contact them, let us know their response. Thank you!

Jubilee & Barrio Dogs in the Houston Chronicle

Great article from the Houston Chronicle about our work and the upcoming Jubilee event! One correction: we have not rescued 300 dogs. We've vetted and fixed at least 300 dogs, many of which had a home or were on their way to one.

Thank you to the Houston Chronicle for recognizing our work!

Barrio Dogs

Barrio Dogs isn't exactly an adoption service — it's a nonprofit staffed entirely by volunteers dedicated to educating lower-income Houston neighborhoods about animal overpopulation, neglect, low-cost sterilization and state animal cruelty statutes. But through the Barrio Dogs Facebook page and Web site, the group often unites hardscrabble barrio strays with foster parents and, eventually, forever homes. If you follow Barrio Dogs on Facebook, beware: Some of the rescues' stories are hard to swallow, but they're made all the more worthwhile thanks to regular tail-wagging happy endings.

"Dog Days of Summer" Dogwash

Our Barrio Dogs team was out beating the heat Sunday, August 26 at the “Dog Days of Summer” Dogwash hosted by Firkin & Phoenix (1915 Westheimer Rd.) to raise money for Barrio Dogs and two local rescues.  There was fun all around with hot dogs & homemade dog treats, a raffle, dunking booth, bounce house, music and of course lots of happy dogs!

Many thanks go out to Firkin & Phoenix, all of the dog washing volunteers and the many others who made this event possible and successful!  Also, thank you to the Houston Chronicle for mentioning this event and some of our very own Barrio Dogs Adoptables (to see the pictures featured in the Chronicle follow the link: http://www.chron.com/news/gallery/Wash-Dogs-48027/photo-3371966.php)

The good news doesn’t stop there though…

Darla not only came out to soak up some rays and play in the water, but she found her forever family too!  Congratulations Darla!

10 Colleges With Successful Pet Therapy Programs

This interesting article talks about different types of pet therapy programs in place at various colleges around the country. We love reading about the great things that dogs can do and are proud of Barrio Dog rescued dogs that participate in our therapy programs in Houston schools and homeless shelters. We plan to bring you more good news about our Barrio Dog therapy program in the upcoming months.

Barrio Dogs: Helping Rescue Dogs Through Outreach and Education

The holidays are a time of parties and joy, and also of dubious charities beating down your door to get to your pocketbook. So Hair Balls wants to cut through the chaos and recommend you check at Barrio Dogs, a nonprofit working to fight animal cruelty and neglect in low-income neighborhoods.

One of the key ingredients is the organization's Youth and Paws (YAP) program, which involves presentations on spaying and neutering, as well as the overall humane treatment of pets. Some of the presentations include visits from dogs the group has helped, and these dogs also work as "Rescue Education Ambassador Dogs" (READ -- Barrio Dogs is big on acronyms) for one-on-one reading sessions, as a way for kids to increase their reading comprehension.

The "Tales to Tails Reading Program" is designed especially for kids in schools in low-income communities who have a tough time reading. As the Barrio Dogs website states, "the presence of rescued dogs enhances the children's fluency in reading as the animal reduced their self-consciousness and distracts them from the fear of being 'judged' by people." Hey, sounds good to us. Barrio Dogs volunteers also bring rescue dogs to nursing homes and children's homeless shelters, with an aim to "bring comfort, distraction and hope" to patients, and foster long-lasting positive associations for kids who've never had a pet.

The group's Better Communities program helps provide donated food and shelter/fencing materials; the "Freedom Fence" initiative hones in on owners who chain their dogs because they don't have a fence. (Barrio Dogs volunteers are careful to conduct follow-up visits to make sure everything's legit. We sorta wish there was a way to chain the owners to a tree, but we'll have to find another non-profit that provides that particular service).

Gloria Medina Zenteno started Barrio Dogs in March 2010, a few years after returning to the East End from a sojourn in the suburbs. Horrified by the glut of stray and abused dogs in her neighborhood, she started Barrio Dogs as a way to raise money and awareness to fight the problem in the community. Since then, her volunteers have visited schools throughout the city -- the word has spread, it seems, but not the donations.

"I got involved with a lot of great rescue groups," Zenteno tells Hair Balls, "but I just felt like with the rescuing, it was neverending, so I started Barrio Dogs." Because she didn't have the resources of the established rescue groups who can take in hundreds of animals, she decided to focus on education and community outreach.

"My plan was more just kind of a community-type group," she says. "I took on my street, my surrounding blocks....[then[ it just took off."

Although the group doesn't operate a shelter, they use donations to cover vet and boarding expenses on whatever dogs they are able to help; this doesn't leave much for the group's main mission of education and community outreach. That's where you and your big heart come in. Please check out the Barrio Dogs website and look at the work they're doing. (By the way, they can always use fosters or adopters, as well).

Zenteno will thank you, and the dogs will lick your face. Or maybe it's the other way around, we're not sure. Either way, your donation will be greatly appreciated.
